the doll pranced around her apartment
wearing her goth lolita and ballerina dresses
and big black hair bows
and pink ribbons around her wrists.
the monster was invited over for dinner that night
it was dark and rainy
and the lightening illuminated the dark apartment,
black and blue shadows flickered
as the lightening flashed.
the doll smoothed down her high collared
Victorian dress
as she heard the elevator open
and the footsteps approach her door.
the monster was soaked.
the doll curtsied.
“i’ll take your coat”
she hung it up in the bathroom to dry.
she led him to the kitchen
and opened the fridge
to grab the pot of food she made,
next to all of her yogurts
and applesauces
and fruits;
the only other things she ate.
the monster sat in the seat by the window
across from her,
where the lightening illuminated his face.
“how’d you get your scar?” she asked
as he took a mouthful of potatoes
and she took a mouseful.
“i was burned accidentally when i was a child.”
“oh, i’m sorry.”
they said nothing and ate in the dark,
the only sounds heard were the
thundering booms from outside,
the clacking of forks hitting fine china,
the faint meowing from the cat
searching for his owner
and the screeching of chairs being pulled from overhead.
